The BURFC played pretty well for this early season tournament taking 3rd place in the Collegiate Open Division. Their first game vs. Sul Ross was scrapped due to Sul Ross not having enough numbers. From there they won a tough game verus TAMU II 10-5 with the first try coming off a nice lineout drive. The final pool game saw BU lose a close match that could have gone either way as UD came out the victor 13-10. The placed Baylor in the 3rd/4th place match which they won convincingly 29-7. The young BU team will continue to get better as the season goes on and looks to peak as the cup season approaches.

1st Annual Cherrybone Memorial Tournament

The Woodlands RFC held the 1st Annual Cherrybone Memorial Collegiate Tournament this weekend and it was a huge success. The tournament is so named in honor of former player and co-founder of the Woodlands RFC John Cherrybone and his son David Cherrybone. The Woodlands RFC provides two scholarships in the name of both men on a yearly basis, one to Sam Houston State and the other to Texas A&M University.
This years tournament included 6 teams: Texas A&M I & II, Sam Houston I & II, Baylor University and Texas State. The tournament is set up in a round robin format with no “championship” to be won. It is a great opportunity for the collegiate clubs to develop new players and patterns while in a competitive environment. There was a good balance between the teams and everyone walked away with something positive from the event.

This will be an annual event to be held every September and The Woodlands RFC is looking to increase the size of the tournament next year.

The 3rd Annual Baylor Rugby Alumni game was the largest one yet. The weekend began at Ninfa’s where we had a party of 30 or so Alums chatting up the good ‘old days and catching up on years gone by. Following dinner we had our first corporate meeting to discuss the operations and running of the Baylor Rugby Association, its goals, its purpose and its direction. This was a very fruitful meeting and some very good ideas were thrown around by all. We will be focusing our attention in 3 main areas over the next year. First, we will be looking to expand our board to allow more members to get involved in the running of the BRA. Secondly, we will look at membership options for the association and what you are granted for being a member. Finally, we will be gathering information about forming a partnership/scholarship with Baylor University and how all of the details of that relationship will work out.
