After much thought and careful consideration the Baylor Rugby family consisting of both current players and alumni leadership have decided to postpone our annual alumni match scheduled for this Saturday September 2nd in wake of Hurricane Harvey devastating impact. The match will be rescheduled for October 7th at 11am in Waco.
Our decision was certainly not taken lightly. Many of us had made plans to participate in the annual Labor Day weekend event but in the end it didn’t seem right to carry on the tradition with so many of our players past and present, as well as their families, from the greater Houston area currently dealing with the unprecedented effects of the powerful storm.
Our collective thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by Hurricane Harvey including our Baylor Rugby family. It is in the most difficult times that we must band together and lift each other up to defeat any opponent that challenges us. This is true not only in our sport but in life. The spirit of rugby is beautifully and simply epitomized in a phrase often spoken between teammates on the rugby pitch: “With You.”
It is within this spirit we draw strength and hope that we can play just a small part in the awe-inspiring efforts of goodwill and compassion to people in need. The student athletes of Baylor Rugby are organizing a donation drive on campus this week and urging Baylor students and faculty to donate supplies such as:
- Canned meats, vegetables and fruits
- Juices
- Assorted crackers
- Rice
- Peanut butter and jelly
- Cereal (hot or cold)
- Canned Beans
- Soups
- Toiletries
- Shelf stable milk
Donations can be brought to the McLane Student Life Center office of Campus Recreation or can be picked up from your location in Waco by contacting Director of Rugby Mason Hering at 512-785-6754 or Club President Jono Cooper at 303-803-7163.
