This past Saturday was a great day for rugby in Waco. We could not have asked for better weather, a more beautiful pitch, or more worthy opponents. Although this was scheduled as an “alumni” match we were a little light on the alum side but Austin Blacks sent up their Mens D-3 side to get some time on the field for their guys as well. We had a handful of alum’s show up and join in to provide the BU squad with a mixed team that brought some solid hard pounding heads up rugby.
This was a spirited match that allowed us to continue the path of improvement and preparation for our first cup match of the season in two short weeks against a very solid Oklahoma team on our home pitch. Austin and the alums never took their foot off the gas and proved to be worthy opponents and victors on the day. That said, the BURFC squad did a fantastic job of punching in scores and holding their own against a predominantly men’s side. I cant recall the exact score but the gap was not huge. despite the victory given up to the opponents on the scoreboard the real win was that we played 100 minutes (5 periods) of rugby and had the opportunity to mix and match players and positions, allowing Nick and I to evaluate many different aspects and give us the opportunity to see what we needed to focus on in the next two weeks in preparation for the Sooners.
We had some absolute gorgeous moments of rugby with solid support play, textbook offloads, running the gaps and scoring tries… we also had our fair share of “what the heck was that” moments that are just the result of a young team trying their best to be everything on the pitch at the same time. Its a welcomed double edged sword as it is better to have guys who want to do something rather than nothing.
All in all a very positive day, capped off by a fantastic relaxed evening at the home of our official university sponsor Dr. Steve Dworkin who filled up 12 feet of tables with some fantastic food from the grill and a couple hundred crazy wings from George’s…
We are looking forward to kicking off another successful season of growth and development for BU Rugby. We appreciate all the alumni support and hope to see you all at one of our games this season.
Dont forget, we have BU Rugby T-shirts, old jerseys and of course raffle tickets for an AMAZING romantic get-a-way weekend in the hill country at a beautiful resort… you cant win it and take your wife there to make up for all the rugby she has had to put up with unless you buy one!
